How to plan a night out with friends (without the 200-message group chat)
Most nights out die in the group chat, not because nobody wants to go, but because nobody is asked a question they can answer in five seconds. Here is the version that works.
Start with one idea, not an open question
“What does everyone fancy?” gets you silence or seven suggestions, which is the same thing. Put one concrete idea in front of people and let them react to it. A curry and karaoke beats a blank page every time.
If you genuinely do not mind what you do, offer two options and let the group choose between them. Two is a decision; five is homework.
Offer two or three dates, never one
A single date is a yes/no, and one no kills it. Two or three dates turn the question into “which of these”, which almost always produces an answer.
- Pick dates at least a week out so people can move things.
- Include one weeknight — they are far easier to get than Saturdays.
- Say when you will decide, so nobody has to hold all three.
Ask everyone the same question at the same time
Asking people one by one means you are the database. Send one link everybody answers, so the answers collect themselves and you can see at a glance who is in and who has not looked yet.
Set a deadline and say it out loud
“I’ll book on Thursday” does more work than any amount of chasing. It gives the quiet ones a reason to answer now, and it gives you permission to decide without a full house.
Decide with the people who answered
Waiting for the last two is how a plan slips a fortnight. Take the date most people can do, confirm it, and tell everyone. The stragglers join the confirmed thing or they do not.
Confirm the boring details in one message
Where, what time, what it costs, who is booking. One message, no thread. Anything that needs a booking, book it while the yes is warm.
Common questions
- How far in advance should you plan a night out?
- One to two weeks is the sweet spot for a group of four to eight. Longer than a month and people forget; shorter than a week and half the group is already booked.
- What if only half the group replies?
- Decide with the half that replied. A confirmed date with four people is a night out; an open question with eight is not.
- Do my friends need an app to answer?
- No. With WeShould you send one link and anyone can answer in their browser — no account, no download.
